What Is Podology? What a Podologist Does and When to Visit One

September 18, 2026 9 min read

Podology is the discipline focused on protecting foot and toenail health, providing professional care and managing complaints at an early stage. The short answer to "what is podology" is this: it is a set of non-surgical, preventive, care-based foot health practices. The specialist who provides podology care is called a podologist.

What does a podologist do? A podologist safely reduces and cares for thickened or fungus-suspected nails, relieves ingrown toenails without pain, treats calluses and hardened tissue, cares for heel fissures, monitors warts and provides preventive foot care for people with diabetes — all in a sterile environment. The goal is to reduce pain, protect tissue integrity and prevent recurrence.

Podology is not the same as podiatry or orthopedics. A podologist is not a physician: they do not diagnose, prescribe medication or perform surgery. When an infection, fracture, circulatory problem or any condition requiring medical treatment is suspected, the patient is referred to a doctor. This distinction is applied strictly in ministry-licensed foot health centers.

How is a podology session performed? It starts with an assessment of foot and nail structure, followed by a personal care plan. All burs and hand instruments are sterilized for each patient and single-use materials are preferred. Treatments are usually painless and take 30 to 60 minutes. At the end of the session you receive home care and footwear advice.

When should you see a podologist? Ingrown or recurring ingrown toenails, thickened nails, discoloration or ridges, painful calluses and hardened skin, heel fissures, sweat-related odor and skin problems, people with diabetes or circulatory issues who cannot cut their own nails, older adults who find nail care difficult, and athletes with heavy training loads all benefit from podology care.

Podology is especially important for people with diabetes. Reduced sensation can hide a small injury that later progresses into a serious complication. Regular preventive foot care allows early detection of risk areas and timely referral to a physician.

Session frequency varies per person. For healthy adults, care every 6 to 8 weeks is often enough; diabetes, recurring ingrown nails or thickened nails may require closer follow-up. The right interval is decided together during your first assessment.

You can extend the benefits at home: cut nails straight across without digging into the corners, dry between your toes after washing, avoid applying moisturizer between the toes, choose shoes that fit your measurements with a wide toe box, and check your feet briefly every day.

Frequently asked questions. Does podology hurt? Treatments are generally painless, and even sensitive cases such as ingrown nails feel relieved afterwards. Can a podologist prescribe medication? No — a podologist is not a physician and refers you to a doctor when needed. How long does a session take? Most treatments take 30 to 60 minutes. Does podology cure nail fungus? A podologist safely reduces and cares for the nail; medical treatment requires a physician's assessment. Is podology suitable for children? Yes, with a plan adapted to age and complaint.
