How to Treat an Ingrown Toenail: Home Care vs. Podology

June 24, 2026 8 min read

An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) occurs when the nail edge presses into surrounding soft tissue, causing pain, redness, swelling, and — over time — infection. This guide answers the most common questions: what helps an ingrown toenail, how to relieve it safely at home, and when professional podology care is the right choice.

Common causes include incorrect nail cutting (rounded corners, cutting too short), narrow or pointy shoes, an inherited curved nail shape, repetitive micro-trauma during sport, and excessive perspiration. In most early cases, surgery is not needed; the right approach brings clear relief within a few days while guiding the nail to grow correctly.

For safe at-home first aid, soak the foot in warm salted water (1 tablespoon of salt or baking soda per litre) for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times daily. Place a sterile gauze gently — without pressure — over the softened area. Do not dig under the nail with sharp objects, and do not try to "shave" it yourself. Wear wide, open-toe shoes for 24-48 hours and, if needed, take an over-the-counter analgesic as advised by your clinician.

What to avoid matters as much as what to do: cutting the corner into a "V" shape, packing cotton under the nail yourself, applying lemon juice or vinegar to "disinfect", or copying online DIY surgery videos can rapidly worsen the situation. If you see pus, yellowish discharge, deep redness, fever, or a body temperature above 38°C, infection is likely — seek a podologist or physician without delay.

In our clinic, the gold-standard approach for ingrown toenails is non-surgical, pain-free orthonyxia (nail brace) treatment. The ingrown edge is gently released under sterile conditions; tamponade or packing is applied if needed; and a custom-sized thin brace is bonded to the nail. As the nail grows, the brace lifts and redirects it, preventing recurrence. The session lasts 30-45 minutes on average; most clients feel meaningful relief immediately and return to normal activity the same day.

Brace follow-ups are scheduled every 4-6 weeks. Full correction takes 4-6 months, depending on natural nail growth rate. People with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or immunosuppressive therapy need particular care; for them, professional assessment is recommended instead of any home "trial".

To prevent recurrence: cut nails straight across without rounding the corners; choose shoes with 1 cm of space at the toe; do not tie sport-shoe laces so tight they squeeze the toes; wear cotton socks to reduce perspiration. Regular medical pedicures catch ingrowth early — along with related issues like calluses or fungal infection.

FAQ — Can an ingrown toenail heal without surgery? Yes, the majority of cases are successfully resolved with conservative methods such as orthonyxia braces, tamponade and packing; surgery is reserved for recurrent or deep-tissue cases. What relieves an ingrown toenail? Warm salt-water soaks, wide shoes, correct nail cutting, and early podological assessment. How long does recovery take? Pain typically eases within 24-48 hours after brace application; full straight-growth takes 4-6 months. Which doctor treats ingrown toenails? Start with a podologist or dermatologist; general surgery is consulted only when infection or deep-tissue involvement is present.
